Even though PDF is a horrible file format, it is well suited for textbooks since it can be opened virtually anywhere, often without needing additional software. Here are some ways to convert from proprietary, DRM-protected formats to PDF.
AZW4
- Install Calibre
- Install the DeDRM plugin (instructions)
- To remove DRM on a rented book, the
mobidedrm.pyfile inDeDRM_plugin.zipneeds to be edited, commenting out these lines:

- Import the AZW4 file to Calibre. The DeDRM plugin will automatically strip the DRM as it is imported. Then use the KindleUnpack plugin to convert to PDF.
VBK
As of 27 August 2017 it appears this no longer works because VitalSource is enforcing Bookshelf updates.
VitalSource Bookshelf needs to be installed, with the book to be cracked viewable in the Bookshelf program.
This program was my final resort in an exhaustive search, but sadly it stamped a huge red watermark on every page of the output PDF unless I bought it. After an investigation into the sorry state of PDF editors, I decided to edit the program itself. Luckily the author made a typo in the watermark ('Vitalsource' instead of 'VitalSource') and I was able to track down the string to line 236340 of the xxd dump of the vbkdrm.exe file. By replacing the string with null bytes, the watermark can be circumvented. The patched version is available here.
Note that this only works with an old version of Bookshelf.

Not much experience here; the only book I got through this seemed to only be a PDF, but allegedly DeDRM as mentioned above supports this as well.

Free Kindle DRM Removal: Calibre DeDRM Plugin
Step 1. Install Calibre and DeDRM plugin
Before removing Kindle DRM with Calibre plugin, you need to install both Calibre and the DRM Removal Plugins successfully. If you have already done it, just skip this step.
Download: Calibre
Download: DeDRM_tools.zip
The DeDRM_tools.zip you download from Github should be unzipped. After you unzip it, you will get a file DeDRM_plugin.zip which is exactly the file you should install to Calibre. Remember to install the DeDRM_plugin.zip instead of the DeDRM_tools.zip.
Then run Calibre, click 'Preference' >> 'Plugins' >> 'Load flugin from file' >> add the DeDRM_plugin.zip file to Calibre. Follow the procedure and you'll find the DeDRM plugin has been added under the 'File Type' option.

After installing them successfully, it's time to remove Kindle DRM.
Step 2. remove Kindle DRM With Calibre DeDRM Plugin
1Add books.
First, make sure you have downloaded your Kindle books to your computer. If not, there are 3 ways you can download them:
(1) From Kindle for PC/Mac desktop app;
(2) From Amazon official website.
(3) From Kindle e-ink device.
When the Kindle books are prepared, run Calibre, click 'Add books' to upload your Kindle books (the .azw format file) to Calibre or just drag them to it. Filesalvage serial number mac.
2Remove DRM from Kindle books.
If your books are downloaded from Kindle desktop app, Amazon site or Kindle device, the DRM will be automatically removed when you upload books.

Earlier in 2019, the Kindle has released a new Kindle KFX DRM. Your Kindle eBooks will be encrypted with this new Kindle KFX DRM if you download Kindle eBooks via Kindle for PC/MAC version 1.25 or higher, or Kindle device with firmware higher than 5.10.2.
